First Farmstand Next Week!

We are pleased to let you know that we are opening the farm stand on schedule next week. It will be open every Tuesday and Friday from 2pm until 7pm, through Thanksgiving. While the bounty may start out small and without a huge variety, we do not want what is ready for harvest now to go to waste. Our harvest size and variety will grow very soon.

We hope you have found the new website and joined our members’ forum. To join the forum, follow this link: http://potreronuevofarm.ning.com/?xgi=52LTKQrvw3ApAk This will be one of the last email updates that we send, as we would like to use the News tab on the site to communicate from now onwards. We will post the weekly harvest list on the site every Monday.

As a friendly reminder, please bring your own bags to the farm stand to carry your produce home. We look forward to seeing everyone on the farm!

A glimpse of all the veggies to come!

The true commencing of the season

The soil moisture was optimal around April 6th and so we began tilling in our cover crop to prepare the fields for our vegetables. The first transplants went in the ground on the 21st, and we are rapidly direct-seeding the root crops, bean and peas. The chickens are doing well and move to new grass every 10 days. We hope they begin laying around the end of June or beginning of July.

We are very happy to offer a new website this year with lots of help from our apprentice Jordan Thompson. Please visit http://www.PotreroNuevoFarm.org for future updates and our weekly harvest list, to be posted each Monday. The site also has a link to a Members’ Forum, which will be a platform for members to share cooking ideas and information. Please sign up through this link so we can begin to include you all in the forum - http://potreronuevofarm.ning.com/?xgi=52LTKQrvw3ApAk

At this time we are hopeful that the farm stand will open on schedule on May 17th. However, we will keep you posted as the wet spring has us just a few days off our planting schedule and the stand may need to open a week later.

We are looking forward to having you back on the farm enjoying all of its bounty. See you soon and let us know if you have any questions.

Winter Update

With February nearly crossed off on the calendar and the rains coming in, it is still feeling much like winter. But glimpses of the upcoming season are all around us. The greenhouse grows a little greener every day, as broccoli, chard, kale and collards stretch their first leaves through the soil. And our cute little chicks, now two weeks old, have doubled in size and can scratch and peck and take dust baths like full-grown birds. Otherwise, we are busy with construction projects and getting ready for our awesome crew to start in April. There are just a few remaining spots open in our CSA. If interested, please send an email to csa@potreronuevofarm.org.
